The Lookout, Troon

About this project

The Lookout, a kiosk on the Troon waterfront, is used by locals and visitors all year round, but years of salt air, wind and rain had left it tired and weathered. The client wanted it brought up to date, with new public toilets and a cafe, and wanted the whole job managed for them from start to finish.

Being right on the coast was the biggest challenge. The roofline and outside walls had taken the worst of the weather, so we assessed them before any work began and chose materials that would stand up to salt, moisture and strong wind. The kiosk is in a busy public area, so we also had to keep safe walking routes open around the site and plan the work in stages to keep disruption down.

The roof was repaired, with damaged materials replaced and the weatherproofing improved. New external cladding went on to protect the building and give it a fresh look. Inside, the public toilets were fully refurbished with new plumbing and drainage, sanitaryware, ventilation, lighting, easy-clean wall and floor finishes and better access for all users. The cafe was fitted out with a made-to-measure counter, new flooring, electrics, lighting, plumbing, preparation areas and an improved layout.

Joiners, roofers, decorators, electricians and plumbers all worked within a small footprint, so our in-house project manager kept the programme, ordering, safety and quality in check and kept the client updated throughout. The kiosk now has modern, accessible toilets, a bright cafe and an outside built to cope with the seafront weather.
