Four-Metre Floating Media Wall with Panoramic Fire, Ayrshire

The client wanted to turn an ordinary living room wall into a four-metre media wall that held the TV, a panoramic electric fire and storage, without the room feeling heavy or crowded. They wanted clean modern lines, no visible wires and hard-wearing materials. We suggested a floating design, which keeps the wall looking lighter and leaves space for lighting underneath.

Before opening up the wall, we surveyed it to find the studs, the service routes and where the weight of the TV and cabinets could be carried. A cable plan was drawn up to move and hide the power, data and AV cables. Over a four-metre span the frame has to stay rigid, so we chose stable sheet materials and strong fixings. The fire manufacturer's clearances and ventilation were built into the frame design from the start, and channels for the LED strips were planned in.

Our joiners built a timber frame with recesses for the TV, the fire and the storage units. The electrician fitted new spurs, an isolator for the fire and hidden AV routes, so the finished wall has no trailing wires. Once the frame was checked, it was sheeted, jointed and plastered. The cabinets were made to fit the exact openings, with push-to-open, soft-close doors and fronts colour matched to the wall, with even shadow gaps at every junction. Dusty work was finished before the cabinets went in, and everything was test fitted before final finishing.

The wall was primed and painted in a low-sheen finish, and the edges around the TV recess and fire were sealed. LED lighting washes the lower edge so the wall appears to float. The result is a calm, tidy room with the TV, fire and storage lined up as one piece.
