Kitchen Renovation with Herringbone Floor, West Kilbride

The owners had already chosen their new kitchen and flooring when they came to us. They wanted a calm, modern kitchen mixing painted units with warm wood tones, much better storage with tall larder units and hidden appliances, and a layout that worked for family life and having people round. They also wanted the room taken back to the walls and rebuilt properly, and better access to the loft above for storage. Our job was everything around the kitchen and flooring supply.

We stripped out the old units, worktops, appliances, tiles and boxing, hacked off the old splashback areas and cut out damaged plaster. That exposed a mix of pipework and wiring left by earlier alterations, so we sorted all the services and brought them up to current standards before closing the walls in. The ceilings were reboarded and the walls repaired, lined and plastered. First-fix electrics went in for the ovens, induction hob, extractor, fridge freezer, wine cooler, sockets and a new grid of recessed downlights, and the plumbing was moved to suit the new sink and appliance positions. We also fitted an insulated loft hatch and timber ladder, placed so it would not get in the way of the tall units or door swings.

The carcasses and tall units were dry-fitted on site first so the layout could be fine-tuned before fixing. The finished kitchen has a full-height wall of painted Shaker fronts hiding the ovens, fridge freezer and pantry, oak-effect units and open shelving, and a wine cooler built into the end of the tall bank. A herringbone timber floor runs through into the next room, and we fitted new radiators across the downstairs.

The kitchen now has proper storage, clear worktops, plenty of room to move, and feels like part of the ground floor rather than a separate room.
