Garage Conversion to Snug and Craft Room, Kilmarnock

The clients in Kilmarnock asked whether their garage, which was hardly being used, could become a proper room. They wanted a snug to relax in and a craft room for their hobbies, finished to the same standard as the rest of their home. The aim was for it to feel like part of the house, not a garage with a carpet put down.

Before starting we planned the insulation, the electrics and the finishes, as these are what make a garage feel like a real room. The walls and ceiling were insulated with a mix of insulation boards and mineral wool, and the floor was levelled with a screed to give a solid, flat base for the new floor finish.

The electrics were partly rewired, with new flush double sockets and four soft LED ceiling lights. Our joiners then lined the walls and ceiling with plasterboard, which was taped and jointed for a smooth finish, and made skirtings to suit the room. A fire-rated door with new ironmongery was fitted between the room and the house to meet the safety rules. Vinyl flooring went down, and the walls, ceilings and woodwork were all decorated. For the craft side of the room we built a cabinet with a worktop, giving storage below and a surface to work on.

We ran the whole job, with joinery, electrics, taping, decorating and floor fitting all managed by us. The clients now have a warm, bright room that they have furnished as a snug and hobby space, and the house has gained a useful room it did not have before.
