Quartz, granite or sintered stone? Choosing worktops

Quartz, granite or sintered stone? Choosing worktops

Stone worktops make a big difference to how a kitchen looks and feels. The three most people choose between are quartz, granite and sintered stone. Here is how they differ.

Quartz

Quartz worktops are engineered: crushed natural quartz bound with resin and made into slabs. Because they are manufactured, the colour and pattern are consistent, and there is a very wide range to choose from, including plain colours and marble-style veining.

  • Non-porous, so it does not need sealing and resists staining well
  • Very consistent from slab to slab
  • The resin can be damaged by direct heat, so always use a trivet for hot pans

Granite

Granite is a natural stone, cut from the quarry. Every slab is different, which is a large part of its appeal.

  • Hard wearing and resistant to heat
  • Natural variation means you should see the actual slab where you can
  • Being natural stone, it can benefit from being sealed to help resist staining

Sintered stone

Sintered stone is made by pressing and firing natural minerals at very high temperatures. The result is a very hard, dense surface, often available in thinner slabs for a slim, modern look.

  • Highly resistant to heat, scratches and staining
  • Colour does not fade in sunlight
  • Very hard, but edges and corners can chip if knocked hard

How to choose

  • If you want a consistent look and easy care, quartz is a strong choice.
  • If you want something natural and individual, look at granite.
  • If you want heat resistance and a thin modern profile, look at sintered stone.

Seeing samples in your own kitchen light makes a big difference. Colours can look very different under showroom lighting.

Questions

Common questions

Which worktop is most heat resistant?

Sintered stone and granite both handle heat well. Quartz contains resin, which can be damaged by direct heat, so a trivet should always be used.

Do stone worktops need sealing?

Quartz and sintered stone are non-porous and do not need sealing. Granite, as a natural stone, can benefit from sealing to help resist stains.

Which areas do you cover for worktops?

We supply and fit stone worktops within 25 miles of our office in Kilmarnock.
