Vetted and inspected before we could join

Cutwood Joinery & Construction is a member of the Federation of Master Builders, the UK's largest trade association for small and medium sized building companies.

Membership is not something a builder can buy. The FMB checks a company's trading history, credit history and directors, asks for proof of insurance and sends an assessor to inspect work on a live site before a builder can carry the badge.

What it means for you

Why FMB membership matters

In the UK nobody needs a licence to call themselves a builder. FMB membership is one of the clearest ways to tell an established, checked company from the rest.

01

Checked before joining

The FMB looks at a builder's trading history, credit history and directors before membership is offered.

02

Work inspected on site

An FMB assessor visits one of the builder's live sites to inspect the standard of the work.

03

Insured

Members have to show the FMB proof of public liability insurance cover as part of the checks before they join.

04

A Code of Conduct

Every member agrees to work to the FMB Code of Conduct, and can be sanctioned or expelled for breaking it.

05

Free help if things go wrong

If a problem with workmanship cannot be sorted directly, the FMB offers a free dispute resolution service.

06

Easy to check

Our membership is public. You can look us up on the FMB website and see our profile for yourself.

Membership backs up how we already work

The FMB badge is an independent check. How we run every job is our own.

Every build is priced line by line by our own Quantity Surveyors, run with RAMS and a Construction Phase Plan, and delivered by our own joiners, plumbers, electrician and tilers. FMB membership means someone outside the company has checked who we are and inspected what we build.

Questions

FMB membership, explained

What is the Federation of Master Builders?

The Federation of Master Builders, or FMB, is the UK's largest trade association for small and medium sized building companies. It was established in 1941, is member led and not for profit, and covers England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Is Cutwood Joinery & Construction an FMB member?

Yes. Cutwood Joinery & Construction is a member of the Federation of Master Builders, member number 166116. You can see our profile on the FMB website.

How does a builder become an FMB member?

A builder needs at least 12 months of trading history. The FMB then checks the company's trading history, credit history and directors and asks for proof of public liability insurance. If those checks are passed, an FMB assessor visits one of the builder's sites to inspect the work before membership is granted.

Why does it matter if my builder is FMB registered?

In the UK nobody needs a licence to call themselves a builder. FMB membership means a builder has been independently checked, has had their work inspected on site and has agreed to a Code of Conduct. It gives you a way to tell an established company from someone who has just set up.

How can I check a builder is really an FMB member?

Use the Check a Member search on the FMB website and search for the company name. Anyone can put a logo on a van or a website, so it is always worth checking. Our own profile is listed under Cutwood Joinery Ltd.

What happens if something goes wrong with an FMB member?

First raise it with the builder in writing and give them time to respond. If it cannot be resolved, the FMB runs a free and confidential dispute resolution service, certified by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, which focuses on getting workmanship put right. Members are required to take part under the Code of Conduct.

Does FMB membership replace my contract with the builder?

No. Your contract is with us, and we answer for our work. FMB membership sits on top of that as an independent check on who we are and a route to help if you ever need it.

What other accreditations do you hold?

As well as the FMB, we are TrustMark registered, SMAS Worksafe accredited through SSIP, a SELECT member and a Living Wage employer. We act as principal contractor on every extension we build.
